The dairy industry is built on a cycle of unimaginable grief that begins the moment a life is born. A mother cow is repeatedly and forcibly impregnated to produce milk for consumers — milk that belongs to her baby. Within only hours of birth, her newborn calf is torn away. The mother cow will bellow and cry out for days, searching for her baby she was created to nurture and protect. This is a heartbreaking violation of the most sacred bond in nature—the love between a mother and her child. In this cruel system, we tragically sever the maternal bond that God designed to be a reflection of His own nurturing love.
Cows are naturally peaceful, inquisitive beings who form deep social bonds and even have best friends, but in the beef industry, this gentle nature is met with systematic violence. These "living souls" are subjected to agonizing procedures—like branding, dehorning, and castration—with no anesthetic at all. They feel every ounce of the pain, their cries ignored by a system that refuses to see them as anything more than a product. The lives of cows tragically end trying to escape the cold, terrifying chambers at slaughterhouses, where their final moments are consumed with extreme fear and the scent of death around them. In treating these gentle beings as mere commodities, instead of the emotional and gentle beings God created, we disregard the "living soul" that He breathed into every creature.
In the poultry industry, birds are denied every natural instinct, never knowing the warmth of a mother's wing or the feeling of the sun on their feathers. They are crammed by the tens of thousands into windowless sheds where the air is so thick with ammonia it burns their eyes and lungs. Bred to grow so large and so fast that their legs often collapse under their own weight, they spend their short lives in constant pain. The cruelty continues during transport, where these terrified birds are violently handled and jammed into crates, often resulting in broken wings and legs before they even reach their terrifying last moments in a slaughterhouse. By caging these innocent birds, we silence a living blessing; we stifle the nurturing heart God gave them to reflect His own care, and we halt the daily praise of the morning call that welcomes His light.
A hen's natural life involves dust-bathing, scratching the earth, and nesting, yet the industry confines her to a "battery cage" for her entire existence. In these cramped wire cages, she cannot even fully extend a single wing, and the constant friction against the metal often rubs her feathers away to bare skin. Her body is pushed to its absolute limit to produce an unnatural number of eggs until she is physically exhausted. The most hidden cruelty occurs at the hatchery, where millions of male chicks—who cannot lay eggs and are of no use to the meat industry—are discarded as "waste" on the very day they are born, often through terrifying and violent means. The systematic discarding of these precious and innocent lives ignores the intrinsic value that the God places on all of His creation.
Pigs possess the intelligence and emotional depth of a young child, yet the industry treats them with cold cruelty. Mother pigs (sows) spend nearly their entire lives in "gestation crates"—metal cages so small they cannot even turn around or lie down comfortably. These highly social and playful animals are driven to madness by the confinement, often biting at the bars in frustration and despair. When it is time to give birth, they are moved to "farrowing crates" where they are pinned down, unable to move or walk. They can see and smell their nursing piglets through the bars, but the system denies them the basic mercy of ever nuzzling, licking, or truly comforting their babies. This forced unnatural separation of a mother from her young is a profound emotional trauma that defines their short, shadowed lives. To cage a mother pig and deny her from nurturing her young violates the kinship God commanded should define our bond with all life.
Fish are sentient beings capable of feeling fear and pain, yet industrial fishing treats them as a mindless resource. Every year, billions of these silent inhabitants of the deep are pulled from their homes to face the slow agony of suffocation or the trauma of decompression. Massive, mile-long nets and indiscriminate longlines also claim the lives of millions of "bycatch" animals—dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, and whales—who are trapped, crushed, and left to perish in the wake of industrial operations. When we destroy the life within the oceans, we are silencing a vast world of wonder and complex beauty that was meant to thrive in peace. In allowing such a massive loss of life, we fail the sacred stewardship God gave us over the waters, turning our role as protectors into a betrayal of His creation.
